Thursday, April 6th is the last day for voters to register in order to participate in the May 6, 2017 municipal election. Early voting will start on April 24 and end on May 2nd.
The Baylor University sexual assault scandal involving former Stephenville High Coach Art Briles’ football program at the institution has inspired a number of campus assault bills in the Texas legislature. Lawmakers are pushing for tougher sexual assault reporting requirements on college campuses in response to the Baylor scandal. The nation’s largest Baptist university is facing federal lawsuits from more than a dozen women who say school officials ignored or suppressed their sexual assault claims and fostered a culture of rape within the football program.
Officials report the Stephenville Museum is recovering after a very expensive year. Board president Sherri Knight of the Stephenville Historical House Museum, delivered the organization’s annual report to the City Council Tuesday.
In April 2015 the oldest house in Stephenville, The Berry Cottage, caught fire and– while firefighters were able to put out the flames relatively quickly– there was fire damage in the upstairs and roof, and severe water damage. Hail and wind caused more damage to historic buildings, costing over $209,000 to repair.
